ORIENTATION

The objective: Understanding what is left and what is right within protists.

The axes are arbitrary, but if we are to establish homologies, and in order to have unambiguous dialogue, we need consistency in our terminology. This will also help us to interpret electron-micrographs in the light of what we see in life.

The axes of dorso-ventral, and anterio-posterior are relatively straightforward, typically developed from observations of living organisms. With two axes in place, the third is derived by imagining yourself being inside the organism, and using your own anterior-posterior and dorso-ventral axes to resolve the left and right.

When working with thin sections the situation is not so clear.
