Logistics
Flight Arrangements
We strongly recommend that all participants travel through Boston Logan Airport.
Ground Transportation from Boston
The Bonanza/Peter Pan Bus Line runs from Boston’s Logan Airport and is the ONLY bus line that provides service to Woods Hole. Schedule information can be obtained from the website at http://www.bonanzabus.com/. To catch the bus, you will need to go out to the curb outside of baggage claim and look for the bus stop (which is marked with signs). There is also an information desk at Logan in the baggage claim area, which provides directions to the bus stop. Look for the bus that says “Woods Hole” on the marquee. The bus ride from Logan to Woods Hole is about 2 hours and 20 minutes. Travel instructions from Boston are posted on our website: http://www.mbl.edu/education/student_services/travel.html. A campus map is also available on this page in pdf format. If you are planning on driving or renting a car, you can find driving directions on our website: http://www.mbl.edu/inside/visit/directions/index.html. We would appreciate it if you would advise us of your arrival time or send us your travel itinerary so that we will know when to expect you.
Ground Transportation from Providence
Bus service is no longer available directly from T.F. Green Airport in Providence, RI (necessitating a taxi ride to the bus terminal in Providence followed by a bus change in Bourne, MA) so we strongly encourage all participants to use Logan Airport. If you are planning on driving or renting a car, you can find driving directions on our website: http://www.mbl.edu/inside/visit/directions/index.html.
On Campus Housing
On campus housing is provided by the MBL. Upon arriving in Woods Hole, come to the Swope Building, (see campus map) where you will be staying.
The Swope building is about a 5 minute stroll from the bus station/ferry terminal. Please take this into consideration when thinking about how much baggage to bring. Below are walking directions from the bus station/ferry terminal to Swope:
- You will walk away from the bus station past the Leeside (a bar/restaurant). The Leeside should be on your right hand side.
- When you arrive at Water Street take a left and walk down the street.
- Cross over the village drawbridge.
- Continue down Water Street to MBL Street, which is the first street that turns right (the sea is on your left).
- Swope is the building right at the end of this one block street (at the point where the street turns to the left).
Check in time for all MBL housing is after 2:00 PM on the date of arrival. Guests may check in at the front desk, located on the first floor of the Swope Center. The Swope office is fully staffed from 8 am to 10 pm, seven days a week. If you arrive after office hours and find the door locked, use the call box at the front door. The MBL watchperson will come and check you into your room.
Unless arrangements have been made in advance with the Housing Office, occupants of all MBL housing must vacate their accommodations by 10:00 AM on the date of departure. Check-out instructions are provided prior to departure date. Please be advised that the lodging accommodations are spartan and provide the bare minimum in terms of amenities (i.e., no alarm clocks or TVs). Please see http://www.mbl.edu/housing/guest_services.html for additional information regarding guest services. The MBL housing office does NOT guarantee single rooms for students, so it is likely that you will be sharing a room with another student.
Meals
Your meals, beginning with dinner on Sunday evening (Oct 23), will be provided on-campus in the Swope Building. Breakfast is served from 7:00 am, lunch at 11:45 am and dinner is served beginning at 5:30 pm. Please advise us if you have special dietary needs or other special needs.
MBL One Card
You will be provided with MBL access cards when you arrive - please have these with you at all times so that you can login to the wireless network with your laptops.
What to Bring
We will be taking field trips, so we strongly recommend that everyone bring warm clothes, waterproof shoes (or wading boots), a warm hat, and rain gear. The weather here in late Oct/early Nov can be chilly. Also, if you have a laptop, please bring it (let us know if are NOT planning on bringing a laptop).
Lecture and lab locations
Lectures will be held in the C.V. Starr Environmental Sciences Building (Starr 322) and labs will be held in the Loeb Teaching Laboratory (Loeb 210). On Sunday evening at 7 pm, we will commence the course in the Swope Meigs room with an introductory lecture by Debashish Bhattacharya. Click here to view a draft program.
Preparing for the Workshop
All students will be expected to give two presentations during the course of the workshop. One presentation will focus on the work you conduct during the workshop. The second presentation will focus on your research, particularly the molecular systematics of your study organism, and should include an evaluation of the concordance between the phylogeny and life history.
