Bicosoeca (bike-o-so-eek-a), one of only several genera of bicosoecid stramenopiles. This genus includes cells which live within loricae. The cell attaches to the lorica by the tip of a recurrent flagellum, the other flagellum extends out of the lorica and beats with an undulating beat. As with other stramenopiles, the (sub-microscopic) hairs on the flagellum draw a current of water towards the cell, and particles are intercepted by a shoulder. As here, the loricae may attached to each other to form an aggregate or colony. Phase contrast.
