Portrait of contracted Lacrymaria, a flask- shaped extremely extensile haptorid ciliate. Kineties appear obliquely oriented in contracted individuals as seen in this image. The neck extends to many times the contracted cell length with a distinctive rapid bobbing and weaving motion as the organism seeks prey. Knob-like mouth region is separated from neck by a circumferential furrow. There is a wreath of longer cilia around mouth region the base of the snout. There is a single prominent macronucleus. Many species described. Collected from freshwater pond near Boise, Idaho. Differential interference contrast.  This image was taken by William Bourland.
