Portrait of Lacrymaria (BORY,1824), a flask-shaped extremely extensile haptorid ciliate. Kineties appear obliquely oriented in contracted individuals. The neck extends to many times the contracted cell length with a distinctive rapid bobbing and weaving motion as the organism seeks prey. Knob-like mouth region is separated from neck by a circumferential furrow. There is a wreath of longer cilia around mouth region the base of the snout. The cytopharynx is supported by trichites . There is a single prominent macronucleus in this species. Many species described. Collected from freshwater pond near Boise, Idaho. DIC. This image was taken by William Bourland. He now uses a Zeiss Axioskop 2 with Spot Insight and Spot Flex CCD cameras (Diagnostic Instruments). Image copyright: William Bourland, image used under license to MBL (micro*scope).
