Katodinium fungiforme cells are round to slightly ellipsoidal from the ventral side, slightly dorso-ventrally flattened. Possessing fine thecal plates with small pores, plate pattern not established. Length 9 - 11 microns, width 8 - 10 microns. Cingulum wide, 1.5 - 2 microns, distal end approximately 1 cingulum-width lower than the proximal. Sulcus wide, approximately 2 microns, slightly sloped to the right. Apical groove not present. Longitudinal flagellum arising at the anterior end of the sulcus. Nucleus in the hypocone, approximately 5 microns diameter. Chloroplasts absent. May contain many small colourless lipid globules or food particles. Cells are generally very fast swimming.
