 Feeding
The heliozoon has enclosed a Colpidium (ciliate) cell. A Polytomella (flagellate) cell is caught on the arms. Two Polytomella cells have already been lysed - a fate that will befall the ciliate. Nucleus is evident in the center of the actinophryid cell. This was added to the site by D. J. Patterson. Image copyright: D. J. Patterson, image used under license to MBL (micro*scope).

Actinophrys sol
From the collection
Protsville
| Description of Actinophrys sol: Actinophrys is a spherically symmetrical heliozoon, body 15 - 60 microns, with a large central nucleus with peripheral nucleolar material. Often with about 40-50 arms, the arms taper from base to tip. A layer of peripheral vacuoles may be present especially after feeding. The axonemes terminate on the nucleus. Several species are known, mostly occuring in freshwater. The type-species A. sol is the most widely reported freshwater heliozoon. |
