Parafurgasonia sorex

From the collection Freshwater and Terrestrial Microbes of Idaho (USA) and Elsewhere

Description of Parafurgasonia sorex: (PENARD,1922) FOISSNER & ADAM, 1981. Description: Size: 85-98 um L X 41-50 um W. Colorless. Ellipsoid, slightly dorsoventrally flattened. Anterior and posterior ends broadly rounded. The cytoplasm is filled with many lipid globules. The single macronucleus is ellipsoid; single spherical micronucleus. The single contractile vacuole at or anterior to mid-body on right side has a solitary ventral excretory pore. The long cytopyge posterior to excretory pore of CV extends to the posterior end of the cell. Unexploded extrusomes are fusiform, approximately 6.5 um in length situated perpendicular to the pellicle. Exploded extrusomes appear as long rods tapering to a sharp point > 35 um long. Small spherical mucocysts occur between somatic kineties but are very difficult to see in vivo even with DIC. They impregnate densely with silver carbonate. Cilia are 8-10 um long. Approximately 23-26 longitudinal somatic kineties. There is a short preoral suture. The anterior subapical oral aperture appears as a shallow transverse slit . At its base there is a pharyngeal basket composed of approximately 20 obliquely oriented nematodesmata with expanded outer ends. The rods of the pharyngeal basket are almost parallel to one another, giving the basket a more or less cylindrical cross section rather than a funnel shape. The paraoral membrane is composed of approximately 29 dikinetids oriented perpendicular to the long axis of the membrane. It curves in a semicircle in front of the oral aperture from its right side to its left. The posterior basal bodies of the dikinetids of the paraoral membrane are unciliated and impregnate less intensely with silver carbonate than the ciliated anterior basal bodies. There is a single slightly curved nassulid organelle immediately posterior to the right side of the oral aperture. It is composed of seven trikinetids. The paraoral membrane and nassulid organelle are very difficult to discern in vivo without DIC but are clearly impregnated in silver carbonate preparations. Found in terrestrial habitats.
