 Multi layer image (DOF)
Staurastrum teliferum is a small desmid with an acanthous cell wall. Desmids have the ability to move slowly on the surface excreting mucilage out of special pores. At the apical triangle shaped surface one can see the pores to excrete mucilage for movement. Depth of focus technique was used for the multi layer image.
Sample from spagnum pond situated in the northern alpine region of Austria near Salzburg. Images were taken using Zeiss Universal with Olympus C7070 CCD camera. This image was taken by Wolfgang Bettighofer. Image copyright by Wolfgang Bettighofer (www.protisten.de); image used under license to MBL.
