Thallus enclosed in gelatinous sheath
Filament or thallus of Microcoleus vaginatus (Vaucher) Gomont 1892 from cryptobiotic soil crust. Particles of debris adhere to the thick gelatinous sheath surrounding the entwined trichomes. Collected in high desert sagebrush habitat in the Escalante National Monument, Utah,37°48'17" N ,111°32'45" W. September 2007.DIC. This image was taken by William Bourland.
