Vannella
From the collection
Gems from Tvärminne
| Description of Vannella: Amoebae with flattened, fan-shaped appearance (i.e. flabellate) without surface wrinkles, some species less than 10 µm in length, others up to 75 µm long.. Breadth often greater than length. Some species are spatulate with a posterior tail. Broad anterior hyaline zone may extend along the sides of the cell. Cytoplasmic mass contains a single nucleus with a central nucleolus. Floating form usually with long, markedly tapering pseudopodia. This feature is useful in distinguishing Vannella from the morphologically similar genus Platyamoeba at the light microscope level. At the ultrastructural level, Vannella has surface pentagonal glycostyles while Platyamoeba has a an indistinct glycocalyx. Some species with small cytoplasmic crystals. Grows readily under laboratory conditions so appears common in stored samples collected from the field. |
