| Description of Stygamoeba: Small amoeba (about 20 µm), thin, elongate and sometimes branching. Locomotion steady, monopodial. Anterior hyaloplasm may form thin lateral hyaline extensions in slow moving amoebae. When not active, amoebae can adopt a broad, leaf-like, morphology with peripheral branches. Floating form with radiating pseudo-podia. Uninucleate. No flagellate stages. Two marine species. Type species: S. polymorpha Sawyer, 1975. This genus was previously classified in the Stereomyxidae but Smirnov (1996) has shown that it is not a ramicristate amoeba. |
