Gibbodiscus
From the collection
Drawings of heterolobosea
| Description of Gibbodiscus: Length in locomotion usually 20 to 35 µm. Cell as a flattened ovoid with a prominent sub-hemispherical post-central hump. A peripheral zone, broadest at the anterior, is always present. During locomotion, numerous slender subpseudopodia are extended and retracted from the anterior edge. Dense granular cytoplasm without conspicuous streaming when cell in motion. Instead the entire hump is dragged along by the clear, anterior peripheral zone. Cytoplasm may contain numerous cubical, or ovoid, crystals. Spherical nucleus with a central nucleolus. Uroid of slender, trailing elements usually present. Two marine species. Type species: G. gemma Schaeffer, 1926. |
