Goniomonas
portrait

Goniomonas (go-knee-o-moan-ass) is one of two genera of cryptomonads without chloroplasts. The other is Chilomonas. Goniomonas (also incorrectly called Cyathomonas in some of the literature) is unlike all other cryptomonads because it is primitively aplastidic, and because there is no deep pocket inside the cell. The homologue is located running parallel to the front margin of the cell, and is associated with a line of extrusiible bodies. With two flagella emerging from one anterior corner of the cell. Very flattened. Common but small. Differential interference contrast.  This picture was taken by Linda Amaral Zettler, and David Patterson of material from the freshwater Lamont Pond (New York State, USA). Goniomonas

From the collection Lamont Pond, freshwater, New York

Description of Goniomonas: Cells laterally compressed, colourless, phagocytic; flagella inserted on the dorsal side of the vestibulum, one flagellum with recurved spines, the other flagellum with fine fibrillar hairs; the vestibulum connects to a ventral furrow, a gullet is absent, but the furrow has a posterior stoma; an infundibulum is located on the left side of the cell, presumably for ingestion of particulates; large ejectisomes form a band around the vestibulum; the periplast is comprised of inner and outer rectangular plates, which are not offset; the periplastidial compartment lacking; fresh water and marine.
