 Portrait
Small Acanthocystis (a-can-tho-sis-tis) species. A centrohelid heliozoon, distinguished traditionally because it has siliceous plate scales and spine scales. It has subsequently been divided into many genera on the basis of the architecture of the scales. See the Lucid guide to Genera of Heliozoa. Differential interference contrast. This picture was taken by David Patterson and Mark Farmer of material from freshwater sites in the vicinity of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, USA) in April, 2001 and from collections of organisms maintained at the University.
