Mites are arachnids, abundant and widespread and most are generally unpleasant - except probably to arachnologists and most other mites. Presumably even arachnologists get itchy or asthmatic as mites move from domestic dust with its riches of shed skin cells, and take to crawling over our good selves nibbling as they go. There are many species, and the food of these organisms ranges widely from the contents of plant cells, other small metazoa, detritus. Phase contrast. This picture was taken by David Patterson and Richard Snyder of material from the contents of Sarracenia pitcher plants in Autumn, 2000. Image copyright: D. J.
