Protaspis (pro-tass-piss) A very common but little studied genus of gliding flagellates, two flagella inserted one in front of the other in a shallow ventral depression near the front of the cell. One flagellum trails behind the cell, one sweeps in front of the cell. There are caps (dictyosomes?) over the nucleus and these can be seen as two lines leading away from the site of flagellar insertion. Protaspis can produce pseudopodia and may eat diatoms. This individual has starchy inclusions. Phase contrast. This picture was taken by David Patterson, Linda Amaral Zettler and Virginia Edgcomb of materials from sediments of the marine site, Eel Pond in Austumn 2000, spring and summer 2001. From the collection
Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts
| Description of Protaspis: Thaumatomastigid with flagella inserting subapically on ventral side, no flagellar pocket, flagella equal or subequal. Ventral surface usually grooved, and nuclei often with nuclear caps (= dictyosomes?). May be dorso-ventrally flattened. Appear naked by light microscopy, no ultrastructural studies have been carried out. Type species P. glans, Skuja, 1939. |
