Bacillaria (bass-ill-air-ee-a) paxillifer is an unusual but distinctive pennate diatom. Many cells are joined together with valve face against valve face. The frustules interlink, and individual cells can slide relative to each other. The colonies can consequently scrunch up or extend for long distances.
