Bacteria
in detritus (DAPI)

Bacteria in detritus. The concept of the detritosphere is an important one in marine ecology. It argues that pieces of detritus are relatively rich (with nutrients, energy and carbon sources) compared to the surrounding water. They are therefore the preferred habitat for many microbes. This image is of a piece of detritus stained with DAPI and then observed with a combination of phase contrast microscopy and fluorescence microscopy. The living bacteria show up as the light blue bacilli within the detritus. About 100 bacteria are evident. Normally, there are up to 10,000,000 bacteria per ml. water, so this piece of detritus has about four orders of magnitude more bacteria than the surrounding water.  This picture was taken by David Patterson and Mark Farmer of material from freshwater sites in the vicinity of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, USA) in April, 2001 and from collections of organisms maintained at the University.
