Description of Chlamydomonaceae:
Cells solitary, cell wall not impregnated with iron, manganese or calcium salts (thick-walled envelope/lorica absent); biflagellate (4 flagella and lacking a cell wall in Polytomella); division of the protoplast during asexual reproduction occurs in the plane of the cell axis (longitudinally), none of the progeny protoplasts remains associated with the parental flagella.
