Description of Jakobids: Circumscription: Flagellates with two flagella located at the anterior end of a ventral feeding groove (i.e., are excavate), with mitochondria, freely swimming or loricate. Ultrastructural identity: Mitochondria with flat or tubular cristae, flagellar apparatus with two basal bodies giving rise to two major microtubular roots, which support the margins of the ventral groove. Other cytoskeletal microtubules arise directly or indirectly from the basal bodies, no extrusomes. Mitosis not described. Synapomorphy: Excavate mitochondriates with two basal bodies.
