O. F. Muller (1773) Vermium Terrestrium et Fluviatilium

The \'Vermium\' volume by O. F. Muller is arguably the first text-book dedicated to microbiology. It was published about a century after the observations of Leeuwenhoek, and less than 50 years after Joblot\'s book. Vermium contains descriptions of many species named for the first time in compliance with the Linnaean style. As a result, many of the common species of microbes have names that were first given to them by Muller. A complete pdf version of this document can be obtained by clicking here. BE WARNED, the file is about 5MB in size. This picture was provided by D. J. Patterson. Image copyright: D. J. Patterson, used under license to MBL (micro*scope).
