The near surface geology of Germany´s costal part of the Baltic Sea (Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) was strongly affected by glacial processes related to the Pleistocene glaciations. As a result there are lots of dips with ponds and (especially in former times) moorlands.
Most of the specimens shown in this collection were gathered in the surrounding of Kiel within an end moraine region including sphagnum ponds and on the island Hiddensee. The focus of the observations are protists. In 2010 the collection was augmented and shows, in addition, images of specimen gathered in the North Sea near Heligoland and the Alps.
