Shoals Marine Laboratory

The Shoals Marine Laboratory is located on Appledore Island, the largest of the nine islands in the Isles of Shoals archipelago in the Gulf of Maine. Appledore is a "Learning Island" offering a unique opportunity to study marine science in the field with a truly hands-on educational experience. Students in the 2007 Field Microbial Ecology are responsible for the content of the three sites in this collection; see the collections titled SML Crystal Lake, SML Intertidal Pool, and SML North Pond for details. We hope this site will continue to grow with future classes and their microbial census efforts of the myriad of microbial habitats on the island including freshwater and brackish ponds, tide pools and the coastal ocean.
