Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

Eel Pond is a moderate sized impoundment of sea water in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. The images are of organisms from the sandy sediments of a small beach along the School Road side - where Calkins used to collect Paramecium. Surface sediments were collected, placed in a dish, excess water removed, lens tissue added, and coverslips placed on the top of the tissue. This approach provides clean and rich samples for observation, as most sediment microbes migrate upwards, moving away from anoxia which develops in the lower reaches of the collection. The microbial community develops on the underside of the coverslips over a period of 24 - 72 hours. This picture of Eel Pond was taken by D. J. Patterson. Image copyright: D. J. Patterson, used under license to MBL (micro*scope).
