Idiosome An structure produced by the organism, as opposed to a xenosome or foreign body. Used to refer to the elements which make up or adhere to the test of some amoebae. An inorganic surface particle in the wall of testate amoebae or other biomineralizing protists, secreted within cytoplasmic vesicles and deposited on the surface of the newly formed cell during binary fission. Idiosomes, secreted by the cell, are distinguished from particles collected from the environment and cemented into the wall [= xenosomes ]. The shape and chemical composition of idiosomes vary among species of testate amoebae and include pearl-shaped, globose, ovate, peg-shaped, or plate-like structures that may be either siliceous or calcareous. IMMERSION OIL A special kind of oil used in microscopy, a drop of which is used between the cover slip and front face of some objectives. Some oils are toxic. [Link to this definition]

IMMOTILE Not moving, sometimes used to refer to cells which are fixed to the substrate. [Link to this definition]

INCLUSIONS Structures located within cells, such as food vacuoles, granules etc. [Link to this definition]

INGESTA Items which have been ingested by a protist and, usually, still retain their integrity so that they may be identified. [Link to this definition]

INGESTION APPARATUS The equipment used by cell to aid in the ingestion of food. Usually used for rods of microtubules lying near the cytostome (mouth), but may also include extrusomes and cytopharynx. = ingestion apparatus. This is the euglenid, Jenningsia. [Link to this definition]

INGESTION ORGANELLE The equipment used by cell to aid in the ingestion of food. Usually used for rods of microtubules lying near the cytostome (mouth), but may also include extrusomes and cytopharynx.. = ingestion apparatus. [Link to this definition]

INGESTION RODS Individual components of the ingestion apparatus, as in cyrtophorine = hypostome ciliates and some euglenid flagellates (Peranema). [Link to this definition]

Inner membrane complex see  Alveoli.[Link to this definition]

INORGANIC Not organic (carbohydrate, protein, etc.), referring for example to sand, mud, silica, etc. [Link to this definition]

INTERFERENCE CONTRAST A type of imaging for light microscopy, in which areas of differing optical properties appear as different colours. [Link to this definition]

INTRACELLULAR Inside the cell, as is the case with the chloroplast in this Pyrocystis cell. [Link to this definition]

IRIS A part of a microscope: [Link to this definition]
