NAKED Used in relation to cells which have no cell wall, lorica, or other coating. [Link to this definition]

Nascent basal body/kinetosome Nonflagellate/nonciliate, in the process of becoming full-length; sometimes lacking B- and C-tubules. Synonyms: probasal body, prokinetosome. [Link to this definition]

NECK A narrow anterior part of the body, often with an ingestion apparatus at the anterior end. Also used to refer to a narrow region of a lorica or test leading to the opening(s). [Link to this definition]

Nectar see  Spore mucilage.[Link to this definition]

NEMADESMATA Stiff aggregates of many microtubules found around the cytostome of some ciliates (e.g. Fig. **) and used during the ingestion of food. A type of ingestion rod. [Link to this definition]

NEMATODE A type of metazoan, typically smooth bodied (Fig. **). [Link to this definition]

NEUSTON The environment of the interface between water and air, often rich in bacteria and protists. Adjective, neustonic. [Link to this definition]

NOMENCLATURE The subject of giving names to objects. In biology, nomenclature usually refers to the rules governing the names of animals and plants embodied in the International Codes of Zoological and Botanical Nomenclature. See also Phylocode [Link to this definition]

NON-MOTILE Not moving, may be said of a whole cell which may yet have motile parts, or of organelles. [Link to this definition]

Non-tubular flagellar hairs Filamentous appendages less than 15 nm in diameter. Non-tubular flagellar hairs occur in various protistan groups, such as the dinoflagellates, euglenophytes, green algae (e.g., Chlamydomonas). In Chlamydomonas they consist of a single high-molecular mass glycoprotein. [Link to this definition]

NUCLEOLUS An optically dense region (or regions) in a nucleus, associated with RNA synthesis. Not always visible. [Link to this definition]

NUCLEUS An organelle found only in eukaryotic cells, in which most of the cellular DNA (genetic material) is located. Most cells have a single nucleus, but certain species may have many. [Link to this definition]

NUDIPODIA A type of unsupported pseudopodium without evident extrusomes (compare extrusopodia). [Link to this definition]

NUTRIENT That which provides nutrition. The nutrients of heterotrophic organisms are primarily biogenically derived macromolecules, whereas those of autotrophs are usually simpler compounds, such as dissolved phosphates and nitrates. [Link to this definition]
