UNDERLOADED used in reference to sewage treatment works, where the input of sewage is less than the plant is designed for. [Link to this definition]

UNDULATING MEMBRANE Part of the buccal ciliature of oligohymenophoran and some polyhymenophoran ciliates. A line to cilia to the left of the mouth used to intercept particles being carried in currents of water. The particles are segregated and passed to the cytostome for inclusion in food vacuoles. Some structures of parasitic flagellates are also referred to as undulating membranes. [Link to this definition]

UNDULIPODIA A term preferred by some workers, usually in the US, for eukaryotic cilia and flagella. [Link to this definition]

UNEQUAL Said of flagella of differing length on one organism. [Link to this definition]
