VACUOLE A structure in a cell enclosed by a membrane. Usually food vacuoles (associated with the digestion of food) or contractile vacuoles (association with the excretion of fluid). Small vacuoles may be called vesicles. [Link to this definition]

Valve Major section of a frustule, theca, test, or shell that is more or less recognizable as separate structure. Valves occur, for example, in diatoms and myxosporidia. In the so-called shell valves of the living cellular "spore membrane" of myxosporidia, there may be from two to six valves, with suture planes between them and, often, special sculpturing on their outer surfaces. See also, Lorica, Spore wall. [Link to this definition]

VENTRAL One side of the body. If the cell is flattened and has most locomotor organelles on a surface that is directed towards the substrate when moving, then that is the ventral surface. If the cell is rounded, but the mouth lies away from the pole, then the surface with the mouth is usually referred to as ventral. [Link to this definition]

VIABLE Able to live. [Link to this definition]

VIDEO A means of obatining a moving record by preserving images on magnetic tape. Formats include VHS, S-VHS, and U-MATIC. [Link to this definition]

VOLVOCALES Those green algae (plastids with chlorophyll B and a cell wall incorporating cellulose) which normally have flagella and swim around. [Link to this definition]
