Ventral surface of the marine phyllopharyngiid ciliate, Coeloperix sleighi (Gong and Song,2004).The cell is broadly ovoid in outline and strongly dorsoventrally flattened. The dorsum is slightly convex and the ventral surface flattened. Ciliature is restricted to the ventral surface. The preoral and postoral kineties are separated by a transverse suture and the preoral kineties are transversely oriented. The postoral kineties are continuous , lacking the central bare gap seen in Chlamydodon. There is a peripheral cross-striated band (CSB) similar to that seen in Chlamydodon however the CSB in Coeloperix is interrupted on the right and left sides by two slightly offset gaps. There are 3or 4 short "tentacles" on the posteromedial ventral surface. These are about 5 µm long and are quite difficult to see even with DIC. The anterior ventral cytostome is supported by prominent nematodesmata. There is a central heteromerous macronucleus. There are two contractile vacuoles situated diagonally. They empty through single pores on the ventral surface. Collected from a commercial marine aquarium in Boise, Idaho.

|Description of Coeloperix sleighi: Description of Coeloperix sleighi : Size 35–50x25–35 μm in vivo, usually about 40x30 μm. Body outline oval to slightly kidney shaped in the dorsal and ventral view, with anterior left end inconspicuously prominent; both ends broadly rounded, left margin straight to slightly concave, right distinctly convex.
Distinctly dorsoventrally flattened about 2.5:1. Ventral side flat, often with inconspicuous depression, dorsal slightly vaulted. Perimeter between ventral and dorsal surfaces with two cross-striated bands, which are separated by two equatorially positioned gaps. Pellicle rather robust. Resting extrusomes granule-like, about 0.5 mm across in vivo, sparsely distributed on the dorsal side and slightly raised from the cortex . Exploded extrusomes rod-shaped, about 0.8–1 μm long .Three or four (usually three) finger-like tentacles, each about 5 μm long, located near the median line of ventral side and stationary in vivo. Cytoplasm colourless and hyaline with posterior portion slightly greyish, where there are often several to many differently sized granules and food vacuoles measuring 2–6 mm across. Cytostome prominent, about 5 mm in diameter, towards cell anterior, but sub-apical and slightly left of the midline; cytopharynx diagonally oriented, extending to posterior right when viewed from dorsal side; cytopharyngeal basket consisting of 12–16 toothed nematodesmata. Two contractile vacuoles, 4–6 mm in diameter, diagonally positioned. Macronucleus heteromerous and ellipsoidal, on average 16x10 μm in vivo, obliquely positioned in mid-body. Micronuclei not detected. Cilia about 10 μm long in vivo. Slowly gliding on substrate. Feeding mainly on bacteria and cyanobacteria. Somatic kineties all composed of monokinetids,
preoral and postoral regions separated by a wide gap. Consistently 4 preoral rows, arched along the anterior margin of cell; 15–16 postoral rows, slightly curved, terminating anteriorly below the cytostome level. Postoral kineties in the left and right field making an inconspicuous suture. Two terminal fragments: one antero-dorsally positioned, slightly left of midline, composed of about 7 basal bodies; another on anterior left margin of cell, with about 5 basal bodies. Equatorial fragment consisting of about 8 basal bodies, positioned near to the right-most postoral ciliary row. Usually 2 (seldom 3) contractile vacuole pores recognizable after protargol impregnation. Perioral ciliature comprising one anterior and two posterior kineties, all composed of dikinetids and transversely positioned. Anterior one long and continuous, crossing ca. 80% of cell width, occasionally interrupted or deformed near middle; posterior two parallel to anterior row, conspicuously separated. Cytopharyngeal basket slightly hook-like after fixation, extending about 70% of cell length.
