Sphaeroeca are colonial choanoflagellates, with a pyriform or ovoid cell bearing one long flagellum arising from a collar and a pointed posterior end. Cells are arranged on surface of a sphere with flagella directed outwards. Sphaeroeca volvox Lauterborn forms spherical colonies 250-500 microns diameter, individual cells 5-6 microns long and flagellum 36-40 microns long, contractile vacuoles at the posterior end.
