Trichonympha (trick-owe-nymph-a) is one of the hypermastigid flagellates - flagellates with large numbers of flagella. They and the trichomonads made up the group called the parabasalids - almost all of which are endobiotic or parasitic. There is an anterior symmetrical mobile rostrum, and the numerous flagella arise from this region and from the region of the body immediately behind. There are also spirochaetes attached to the back of the body. The nucleus is a large structure lying some distance behind this. Ingesta (food vacuoles) are found in the posterior part of the body. From the termite Zootermopsis, supplied by Wards Natural Science Establishment, Rochester, New York, USA. Phase contrast. This picture was taken by Linda Amaral Zettler, Lorraine Olendzenski, and David Patterson of material from the intestines of the termite Zootermopsis. Image copyright: L Amaral-Zettler, L. Trichonympha
From the collection
Zootermopsis - termite
| Description of Trichonympha: Hypermastigid with a spindle-shaped body (75-150 µm) in length. Rostral kineties are independent from kineties on the rest of the cell. Rostral tube divided into 2 hemi-rostral plates composed of the association of parabasal fibres. Parabasal bodies regularly arranged around the nucleus. Ultrastructural study has shown 2 privileged basal bodies on the top of the flagellar area of the rostrum and pelta-axostylar rows underlying the membrane of the cap. At division the 2 hemi-rostra separate and reconstitute their symmetry in each daughter cell. Seven species live in Cryptocercus punctulatus e.g. T. okolona and about 13 species occur in termites such as T. agilis in Reticulitermes lucifugus. Type species: Trichonympha agilis Leidy, 1877. |
