Bicosoeca, a stramenopile flagellate (the feeding flagellum has stiff hairs and its activity draws water to the cell) living within a stalked egg-cup shaped lorica. The feeding flagellum projects out of the lorica (most of these cells have contracted into their loricas), a second flagellum arises at the front of the cell, curves over the cell body and attached the cell to the bottom of the lorica. This flagellum can contract and draw the cell quickly into the lorica. This genus also often reported under the name Bicoeca. Differential interference contrast. This image was obtained by Feng Weisong, Gu Xiwen, Yang Jun and Miao Wei (of the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) and David Patterson in the summer of 2002. Bicosoeca
From the collection
Lake Donghu, China
| Description of Bicosoeca: Biflagellated cells enclosed within an organic lorica, usually vase shaped. Solitary of colonial, if colonial may be arborescent or ball-shaped. Lorica may attach directly to substrate or have stalk. Anterior margin of cell raised on one side to form a collar. This forms part of the ingestion area. Cells may retract into their lorica by action of the recurrent flagellum, anterior flagellum coils up. Sometimes and incorrectly spelled Bicoeca. About 40 species, freshwater and marine. Type species: B. lacustris, James-Clark, 1867. |
