Description of Excavates:
This group of flagellates is distinguished by a number of ultrastructural features, but the most obvious feature is that flagella form clusters at the head of one of more grooves which are used for feeding. There is some dispute about the extent of the group - i.e. whether it is paraphyletic because as currently conceived, it could be argued to be equivalent to the eukaryotes.
