Little Sippewissett salt marsh, Massachusetts, USA

The Sippewissett salt marshes are located in the vicinity of Woods Hole (Massachusetts, USA). They are extensive marshy habitats with very little wave action but with considerable organic input. The fine muds become anoxic close to the surface. The muds are microbially very rich. The sediments yield a rich array of sulphur and iron metabolizing organisms as well as many aerophilic taxa.
