| WALK

A form of motion whereby the organism moves across the substrate, propelling itself with a to-and-fro movement of cilia or cirri. [Link to this definition]
| WALL
A rigid layer completely enclosing a cell and pressed against the cell membrane. [Link to this definition]
| Wall fimbriae
Extensions of the cell wall that radiate as fibers perpendicular to the cell surface. Often found on pathogenic yeast and smuts, they are thought to have a role in determination of fungus and host interaction. Extracellular protein fibrils that appear to be serologically related to the fimbriae or fungi have also been observed on the cell surface of prymnesiophyte flagellates. [Link to this definition]

| WATCH GLASS
A small concave dish which may be used to contain fluids, cultures etc., for observation under a binocular microscope. Solid watch glasses are squat paralellipipeds with a concave curving of one surface, and are more stable (and therefore satisfactory) than watch glasses which are a thin curved sheet of glass. | WATER COLUMN
The part of a lake or pond lying between the benthos and the water-air interface. [Link to this definition]
| WHIP-LASH
A type of flagellar motion found only in some euglenids, in which a tight loop progresses from the base of the flagellum to the tip. USE NICE PICTURE OF EUGLENA [Link to this definition]
