|  | Habitats not rich in dissolved salt are captured within the broad remit of freshwater sites, mostly conceived as static water bodies from puddles to ponds and lakes, or moving water bodies from trickling rivulets to majestic rivers - but also including dew and groundwater. Surviving in freshwater habitats presents some greater challenges for microbes than do marine and terrestrial habitats because the lower concentrations of solutes outside the cell offer fewer resources and also promote considerable leakage of the dissolved contents of cells.
